This series contains corporate records of the National Conference of Afro American Lutherans (NCAAL). These records are primarily from 1974 to 1977 and include a wide variety of documents related to the origins and workings of NCAAL as a not-for-profit organization. This series contains photocopies and some originals of official documents related to NCAAL's incorporation in the State of Missouri. Included are the certificate and articles of incorporation, forms pertaining to a change of registered agent, and the filing of an annual registration report. There is correspondence from NCAAL's legal counsel regarding NCAAL's incorporation and efforts to file for tax-exempt status. There is also correspondence from the State of Missouri pertaining to information required to comply with Missouri's employment laws. The agendas and minutes from meetings of NCAAL's Board of Directors are filed by year, but are interspersed with other documents. This makes finding the minutes and agendas from all the Board of Directors meetings difficult. There are also minutes and agendas from other NCAAL meetings, including the minutes from the NCAAL's first National Assembly in August 1975. Correspondence is interfiled with the other documents within this series. Subjects include agenda items for upcoming meetings, the future of NCAAL, financial and budgetary concerns, plans for NCAAL's national assemblies, personnel matters, and general appeal letters requesting assistance from NCAAL members. Authors include Dr. Albert "Pete" Pero, James W. Mayer, James McDaniels, and Leonard Benton, president of the NCAAL Board of Directors. The remaining records are of various types. There are position papers with subjects related to the concerns and goals of NCAAL. A copy of a critique of the Black Lutheran Lay Caucus, written by the Executive Secretary of the LCMS Board for Social Ministry, Northern Illinois District, is with the other position papers. Other records include informational pamphlets and brochures, and ledgers for monthly expenses, membership pledges, offerings, and contributions. There are copies of a contract between NCAAL and a company hired to produce a variety of audio-visual and print material for NCAAL. And there are three issues of NCAAL's newsletter, For Such a Time As This. It is not known if additional issues were published. Duplicates were removed and discarded.
